I am well aware that the fundamental message at the heart of this poster, made and distributed last month by a group of young female artists in New York, is one I should (and perhaps usually would) push against; I am open to all suggestions that this sort of statement is unforgivably counter-productive and sanctions attitudes that I’ve been known to criticize, but I must admit to liking this smart (and timely!) take on Joan Baez’s classic anti-war image from the 60’s.
Perhaps my feelings would be more diluted (read: less batshit-optimistic & uncharacteristically forgiving) if Obama was not running against John McCain today, but as it stands I’m willing to ‘take my feminazi glasses off’ on this one and say that while I may not entirely agree with the phrasing of either poster I think it is an important political statement expressed in a sufficiently humorous manner. Also there’s no way in hell I would ever have sex with a Republican…

well, in fairness, this campaign is a lot more dignified than all those ‘no bush’, ‘the only bush i trust is my own’, ‘read my lips, no more bush’ posters!
Comment by sam November 5, 2008 @ 10:56 amthanks for that, I am drawn to a ’spot the differences’ process here, the reduction of the musical instruments, the appearance of a plant, the disappearance of the painting-interestingly the 60s poster prompts for a negation (say NO) whereas the current one for is a YES-YES condition. Also, the obama one is addressed to both women and men, the text at the bottom is clearly for women who will resonate with the old poster. And the message to women actually makes an argument, that is ‘you are an old feminist but dont make the mistake and vote for Palin just because she is a woman’ whereas the message for men is just a trade-off, ‘vote obama and will be rewarded with sex’, I mean it threats them as cavemen! Now I even more think that the poster is made fr women overall, that it says ‘dont have sex with a republican voter boy’! Is that sexual politics or what?
